Story

Originally, I was only involved in the Foundation as a way of keeping Amy in the forefront of people's minds. Nobody wants a friend to be forgotten, especially not a friend as vibrant, positive, beautiful and unique as Amy.

But my first Share The Road Tour in 2014 got me enjoying cycling too (against my better judgement), and now to me the Foundation is also about something much bigger than that - making sure I can come home safely. Helping to make sure that my kids can ride safely on the road in years to come, without me worrying that they should be doing another, safer sport. And hopefully in doing so easing some of that aggression on the roads which doesn't do anyone, cyclists or motorists, any good.

The Foundation has achieved a lot in the last ten years, and I am proud to have been a part of it. On the back of the Amy Gillet Foundation campaign, QLD, SA, ACT and Tasmania have all amended their legislation to include safe passing distances - this ride ends at Parliament in Victoria to help convince them to do the same. We're riding 850kms from Canberra to Melbourne both to raise awareness along the way and to raise funds to help the good folks at the AGF continue their steller work.

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
