Story

Close to ten years ago when I started to take exercise and riding slightly more seriously, I decided I needed a "target ride" to train for. That ride was the second ever Amy's ride back in 2007. Since then I've done several of the Amy's Geelong rides (including the 120k ride when it was 43 degrees on the bike - I don't recommend it), Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra and the Lorne Gran Fondo since its inception 5 years ago.

So, turning 50 I've decided to up the ante and do their primary fundraising ride - 6 days in November, 835k from Canberra to Melbourne via the bumpy bits, through my old stamping ground of North-East Victoria - Jindabyne, Corryong, Beechworth, Mansfield and Yarra Glen to be precise.

At a serious level, the AGF is the only charity I regularly donate to. I can't pinpoint why, but in the back of your mind when you ride is the idea that you are playing in traffic. This ride is to take the "A Metre Matters" message to the Victorian Government to encourage them to join QLD, SA, ACT, and Tas all of whom have amended their legislation.

At a personal level I've had the pleasure to meet Amy's parents several times on these rides, and I defy anyone to not be moved by their energy and commitment to the cause.

The target is $10,000, which put simply is 100 donations of $100.

So, to those I know, work with, lent money to, borrowed money from, donated to previously, any donation is appreciated.

Thanks,

jon

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
